Over the course of an unforgettable weekend Rick and Ellen will teach you the age-old secrets of carving as you capture in wood one of the most delightful of wild creatures - the Adirondack's own Black-capped Chickadee. (There should be plenty of these lovely birds flitting about Prospect Point yfor inspiration!) Here's the Itinerary for this All-Inclusive Event:

Carving a Chickadee

Arrive at Prospect Point @ 3:00 PM on Friday, get settled in and drink in the glory of the mountains! Things start off with a Welcome Dinner Friday evening by the fire.

After supper, Rick and Ellen will introduce everyone to the wonders of woodcarving, giving an informal discussion about carving and touching on tool selection, safe sharpening and carving techniques, dreams and objectives - raising the curtain for the weekend that follows.

Saturday morning from 7:00-9:00, enjoy our famous homemade, All-You-Care-To-Eat Adirondack Breakfast! Then the workshop begins in earnest as we carve away, guided by the Bütz's careful instruction. After lunch we launch back into our projects, employing time-honored methods to flesh out our carvings. At 4:00 we wrap-up for the day, with a bit of free time to enjoy the glorious mountain setting before a truly delightful dinner. Saturday night is open to fine fellowship around the fire, or splendid solitude in your cottage, with a good book and a cup of hot tea or cocoa.

Class Chickadee

Sunday morning brings with it another scrumptious breakfast, followed by the weekend's final lessons: The Finishing Touches of Carving. Once the actual wood work is complete, the Bütz's show how to apply special paints to add astonishing life and elegance to our projects. Lastly, we'll set up all of our birds for a final Dazzling Display of Glory in the Prospect Room, where we can ogle and admire our creations to our hearts content! Your finished carving will be a work you'll be proud to display on the mantle, keep as a treasure or present to a loved one.

Rick and Ellen Bütz are among the foremost teachers of woodcarving today. Their best-selling books and articles garnered international acclaim. On the heels of their first book - which sold nearly a quarter million copies - WMHT TV in Schenectady, NY, asked the couple to host a PBS Series ... and the rest is history. Their show, "Woodcarving With Rick Bütz", spread like wildfire and was aired by some 200 television stations throughout the United States and abroad. While Rick was the show's ever-endearing host, Ellen was equally critical to its success, preferring to work behind the scenes, writing the scripts and assisting in a myriad of quiet ways. The program proved so popular that nearly 100 episodes were filmed over the better part of a decade, faithfully enjoyed by millions of viewers at home and abroad, winning the admiration of the general public and the respect of the carving community.

Praised for his "craftsmanship and artistry", for his "expertise as an instructor," and for almost certainly doing "more to popularize woodcarving than anyone else in the field", Rick was the Recipient of the 2004 Carver of the Year Award by Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine.
The couple's books continue to be sought after and cherished, and their breathtaking and often whimsical carvings grace numerous public and private collections.

Final Thought:

One could not ask for more knowledgeable, patient and supportive instructors than the Bütz's. We should know ... Once upon a summer, as teenagers, we ourselves were lucky enough to have studied with this remarkable duo -- shortly before their careers skyrocketed and they became household names across the country. The influence of these incredibly kind, gracious, and humble artists inspires us to this day and guides us in all we endeavor.
